My school lunch experience was much, much different from young children in Japan. It looked a lot like this picture. We all left our classrooms and gathered in the cafeteria to eat. We found our friends to sit with and after eating we all headed outside to play for the after lunch recess. You did the same, right?

I love living in Japan. Food is great, the people are nice and the culture is rich and interesting. It enfolds one in a comfortable closeness that takes getting use to but which yields rich rewards for anyone willing to invest themselves into it.

A man named Caleb Trim created this incredible info-graphic to show the state of missions in Japan. It was shared on a blog post by his wife, Beth. They both deserve all the credit for this and their post can be found at Trimmed Tales. Yuka and I live in Kanagawa where the population to church ratio is at 16,000 - 19,000 people . . .

What a beautiful planet God has created. Extraordinary beauty can be found all over the world. Here, I will highlight a few places of special beauty found in Japan. Some of these pictures are of the incredible natural beauty of this island nation while others have been shaped and formed by the Japanese people from the beauty they find in God's creation all around them.

These 35 ancient Japanese sayings are proverbs that reflect the thinking of a sometimes mysterious and hard to comprehend people group. I especially like number 34. It reminds me of Proverbs 18:4 "The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook."

Japan's "cutesy" culture has a dark side in the way high school girls are treated. Schoolgirls are now offering themselves for "walking dates". Middle-aged men pay to walk with them and flirt with them and often these walks happen to meander past (read - into) love hotels. Japan is a land of beauty and charm. The Japanese people are world renowned for their gracious politeness. But this is a culture devoid of Christ and their moral standards are determined more by what may bring shame than by what may be wrong.
