It's not my job!

The purpose of our existence is to bear fruit; this brings glory to our Father. BUT bearing fruit is NOT our job.

Psalm 1:3

He (the righteous) is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

John 15:5, 8

I am the vine; you are the branches.
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit,
for apart from me you can do nothing.

By this my Father is glorified,
that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

A "Christian" with no fruit is, I think, not possible. Bearing fruit fulfills the purpose for your existence. Naturally, we want to see some fruit growing here and there. And in fact, we would really like to see an abundance of fruit in our lives. And, coincidentally, so would our Father. We try all sorts of things to produce fruit and the result is that for the most part we have a lingering uneasy feeling that something is just not going well. We hope there is sufficient fruit and that the Lord is happy with us.

For some divine insight into this, let's look at Psalm 1:3 again. The focus is not on the fruit. The point here is that the righteous are like a tree planted by streams of running water. Like us, the fruit tree exists to produce fruit. And apple tree is designed by God to produce fruit. But, an apple tree planted in rocky, unhealthy and dry soil is not going to produce fruit. The purpose for the existence of the apple tree is to produce apples. BUT, the job of the apple tree is to put its roots down into good, well watered and nutritious soil. If the roots are well cared for the fruit will come.

The same thing is true of us! The purpose of our existence is to bear fruit that brings glory to the Father. BUT our job is not to bear fruit.

Our job is to burrow our roots deep into the Vine, Christ Himself.
If our heart, mind and soul are burrowed well into Christ, if we remain (abide) IN Him,
fruit will come, our Father will be glorified and
the purpose for our existence will have been fulfilled.
