It's a Mad, Mad World

2 Peter 2:1-22  This entire chapter reveals the evils of false prophets and not only the danger they present to all of us in the Church, but also God's anger toward them. As Don Wright says, these are, "false prophets, self-centered leaders. How much easier it is today to be led astray than (it was) in Peter's day!"

2 Peter 2:18 reveals, “For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.”

Fake news, voter fraud, correct news presented with a strong bias one way or another, everything we see around us is tainted with the stain of sin. Everything is corrupt and decaying.

But, the amazing thing is, in all the corruption and decay of sin, we can still see the glory and beauty of God. God's glory is still being proclaimed throughout all of creation! In 1 Timothy 3:16 we read, "He (God)  was manifested in the flesh, vindicated  by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory." And, of course, the amazing proclamation of Psalm 19 "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. . . . . "

And, as Amy Carmichael said, "I may be dust, but I am Your dust."

The miracle is that God, in the death and resurrection of the Son, Jesus, is redeeming a people for himself, a clean, holy people set free from the corruption of death and sin. We have been made new; we are now children of God; We populate a new kingdom where all of us are kings and priests and profits of the Most High.

In Christ, ours is a new way, a new culture. We are, indeed, in the world but we are not to be of it. Our lives are ordered from above, through the power of the Holy Spirit. We live a new way. Proverbs 25:21 *"If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,"*

Luke recalls for us the words of Jesus, “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.  And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them." (Luke 6:27-31)

James 1:22, "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
