Eating Lunch in School

school lunch

My school lunch experience was much, much different from young children in Japan. It looked a lot like this picture. We all left our classrooms and gathered in the cafeteria to eat. We found our friends to sit with and after eating we all headed outside to play for the after lunch recess. You did the same, right?

Words Matter

I love living in Japan. Food is great, the people are nice and the culture is rich and interesting. It enfolds one in a comfortable closeness that takes getting use to but which yields rich rewards for anyone willing to invest themselves into it.

Submit to who?

Acts 14:8-10   Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking.

Absolutely Sure

Occasionally, people in power come to the conclusion that doubt is a problem. They conflate confidence with certainty. Along the way, things worked out for them. They had a willingness to leap, some lucky breaks and a lot of hard work. So they seduce themselves with the black and white dichotomy of certainty. Because, after all, they were certain and look what happened. It all worked out . . .

State of Missions in Japan

A man named Caleb Trim created this incredible info-graphic to show the state of missions in Japan. It was shared on a blog post by his wife, Beth. They both deserve all the credit for this and their post can be found at Trimmed Tales. Yuka and I live in Kanagawa where the population to church ratio is at 16,000 - 19,000 people . . .

Beautiful Japan

What a beautiful planet God has created. Extraordinary beauty can be found all over the world. Here, I will highlight a few places of special beauty found in Japan. Some of these pictures are of the incredible natural beauty of this island nation while others have been shaped and formed by the Japanese people from the beauty they find in God's creation all around them.

Ancient Sayings from Japan

These 35 ancient Japanese sayings are proverbs that reflect the thinking of a sometimes mysterious and hard to comprehend people group. I especially like number 34. It reminds me of Proverbs 18:4 "The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook."

All Things Were Created by Him

For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for him. And he is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church.
