Tale of the Two Trees

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil on one side and the Tree of Life on the other. -- Which do you choose? Would you go for life or knowledge? Adam and Eve were, after all, alive and everything was cared for. Did they need the Tree of Life? They were young, strong and completely healthy. Everything needed for life was already given to them. ANY tree, any plant--all of them there for Adam and Even to enjoy . . . except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

But why was it tempting? What was it's allure? Maybe they just wanted to be more than they were? That may be our attraction to super-heros. They are more; they are stronger, smarter, faster, often more noble . . . they are better than us and that is attractive.

Tree of knowledgeOr maybe God was so amazing, so wise, so aware, so mature . . . maybe they wanted to be more like him because they admired him so much. Maybe that is what drew them to the tree in the first place. But once there, satan began to exploit their desires and he planted doubts about their creator, their benefactor. They wanted that "special" knowledge, the knowledge that God had, apparently satan had it too. So why didn't God want them to have it? Maybe he wasn't looking out for them after all. Maybe He was holding back something special, something to make them feel important, to be respected . . . to be more like God.

In today's world we still seem to be seeking the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge more than we are the wisdom of the Tree of Life. The wisdom of man and our quest for more knowledge is still seeking to exalt itself over the "foolishness of God". But there are those among us who are seeking life. From the buddhist monk to the Catholic priest and the many, many seekers of "life" who use various methods they hope will lead toward eternal life of some sort.

But life is not something we can attain. It's a gift from God. And Eternal life is far beyond our grasp. We have been barred from eating the fruit of the Tree of Life. We didn't eat it when we had the chance--and instead chose knowledge. We wanted to get it on our own, we chose to enrich ourselves apart from the wisdom and grace of God.

But now we have renewed hope! God has offered to cleanse us from our sin--to make us pure and holy--to make us once again eligible to eat from the Tree of Life. In God's grand design . . . The Tale of the Two Trees, we will come full-circle to paradise, perhaps the re-created Garden of Eden and we will have free access to the Tree of Life!!

Tree of LifeRevelation 22:1-2, 22:14 "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with it's twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates."

God's story is complete. He has drawn a full circle from creation, fall of man, banishment from the tree of life to restoration, cleansing and full access to the tree of life once again, AND, the river of life as well!! All sin will have been utterly cleaned and will never contaminate this place or you and I again!!

Romans 11:33-36 "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. AMEN!!
